Ways to Fill Your Life with Hygge

What is Hygge Living?

Hygge (pronounced hue-guh not hoo-gah) is a Danish word used when acknowledging a feeling or moment, whether alone or with friends, at home or out, ordinary or extraordinary as cozy, charming or special. It is a concept that encompasses a feeling of cozy contentment and well being through enjoying the simple things in life. Here’s a video that nails the pronunciation. Hygge Pronunciation

It is an important part of Danish culture. Danes created hygge because they were trying to survive boredom, cold, dark and sameness. The undefinable feeling of hygge was a way for them to find moments to celebrate, acknowledge and break up the mundane or harsh. With so many cold, dark, days, the simple act of lighting a candle and enjoying a cup of coffee could make a huge difference to one’s spirit.

If you have enjoyed reading a book on a rainy or snowy day, snuggled with a blanket and a cup of hot cocoa, coffee or tea, you’ve experienced Hygge without even knowing it.

Hygge is enjoying the simple things in life.

  • Candles
  • Fireplaces
  • Blankets
  • Homemade Comfort Food

These are the little things all year round to enjoy.

What is not Hygge:

  • Staring at your phone all day
  • Hibernating indoors all winter
  • Strict Rules
  • Purchasing products, just to be on trend

Hygge requires consciousness of slowness and the ability to be present and enjoy the present.

Ways to Fill Your Life with Hygge
