Simple Tips for a Healthier Lifestyle Over 50

Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle

A healthy lifestyle can be a challenge. Aging gracefully makes it even harder to maintain a healthy lifestyle over 50. Daily life can be overwhelming with a full time job or wondering if we have enough to retire, family and kids or grandkids and maintaining a home. We can incorporate healthy living in our every day life. We just need to start with simple new habits. We don’t have to run a marathon or meditate for an hour a day. The key is to just start. Add additional habits every day. Over time, small things add up to big results.

I put together some tips that have been helping me and maybe they will help you to live a simple and healthy lifestyle.

Tips for Healthier Living Over 50

1. Daily Pre/Probiotic

A healthy gut impacts digestion, healthy skin, immunity, mental health and more. A full glass of water with a probiotic each morning can boost your gut health.

A synergistic prebiotic and probiotic supplement, like Monat Balance, is important for achieving and maintaining a healthy immune system and promoting a healthy digestive tract. Supports healthy digestion, immune response, improved energy and a clear, even complexion.

2. Water First Thing

I love my coffee and seem to be a little bit of a coffee addict, but I start the day hydrated with water. It helps aid digestion and boost energy. So taking that pre/probiotic helps get this step in.

3. Try the Stairs

Depending on your level of health and fitness, and maybe the amount of floors you need to take, try the stairs. The more physical activity in your life, the more calories burned and step you can get in. It will also help strengthen and tone your legs and core muscles.

4. Use Non-Toxic Products

Conventional care products are formulated with toxic ingredients that absorb into our body’s largest organ…our SKIN!

Make a switch to some of these products for a healthier lifestyle:

Monat Hair, Skin & Wellness

MIG Living Give $10 and $10 Off

5. Non-Toxic Household Products

These are also filled with harmful chemical ingredients. They are not healthy for us, our grandkids or kids or our pets. Switching can reduce our exposure to environmental toxins in our home. A great place to start would be with GROVE. Mrs. Meyer’s, Grove, 7th Generation, and Method are great products to switch to. If you prefer, you can search how and make your own cleaning products as well.

6. Move Every Hour

We sit to work at our desk, sit to eat, sit to watch TV. Standing every 30 minutes or moving every hour will help our health. Sitting for a prolong period of time can have an effect on our weight, neck and back pain, diabetes, and muscle mass just to name a few.

A few ways to try and move while you are at work:

  • Stand up and have a quick break from your desk every 30 minutes
  • Stand/walk around when taking phone calls
  • Go for a walking meeting with colleagues
  • Use a small glass for water, increasing the amount of times you walk to fill it up
  • If you work at a desk, try a standing desk or move to a higher surface if available
  • Walk to the furthest toilets or water fountain each time you get up
  • Take the stairs when possible
  • Stand at the back of the room for presentations
  • Eat lunch away from your desk

7. Sweat Every Day

Physical activity is one of the best ways to live a healthier lifestyle. Get that heart rate up. Running, biking, dancing, yoga, walking or even cleaning the house. Go up and down your stairs, walk around the block, go swimming, lift weights…just move your body, sweat and get some steps in. I promise you will feel better, think better and live a happier life.

8. Have a Positive Mindset

The only difference between a good day and a bad day is our attitude. Mindset is everything! Recognize negative thought patterns and counter them with positive.

I have to - I get to

I can’t - I can and will

I hate - I love

Easier said than done, but workin on it every day will make it easier.

9. Eat the Rainbow

I don’t mean Skittles Candy! Aim to eat all the colors of the rainbow each day…peppers, bananas, cucumbers, carrots, apples, lettuce. Filling up on protein, fruits and veggies will help you feel much fuller and keep you from wanting to many carbs or sugars. Cut back on processed food. Your brain, not your stomach, is the organ responsible for feelings of hunger and fullness. If you take your time during meals and eat more slowly, you allow your brain adequate time to send the “full” message to your stomach and allow your food to be fully ingested.

10. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar can be a cure all. It helps digestion, relieve bloat, boost immunity, regulate blood sugar levels and more. Use raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar and only a teaspoon a day.

It’s a common myth that getting fit is only about eating healthy and exercising. In reality, creating a healthy lifestyle and maintaining it isn’t about just those two factors—it’s also about being able to keep a positive attitude, strong mental health and a healthy self-image. Although there is a ton of advice out there on how to achieve a healthy lifestyle. And don’t forget to get enough sleep!
