Natural Remedies to cope with Perimenopause

In perimenopause, you ovaries are transitioning to produce less estrogen. Your periods can become irregular and you can skip periods. Eventually your cycle will stop and you will have reached full menopause after one complete year without a period.

Your body will take time to adjust to new hormone levels. New hormone levels means new adjustments to your body. Symptoms will be vaginal dryness, hot flashes, and difficulty sleeping. Our sex drive will decrease and our metabolism slows down. You can see a doctor or a naturopath about having them treated with hormone replacement or you can try some home remedies.

Every body is designed differently. These are just some home remedies to try.

Yoga

Yoga can help insomnia, mood swings and hot flashes. Yoga will also improve mindfulness and a peaceful feeling to your every day life.

Dong Quai

This remedy is a Chinese medicine. The root of Dong Quai is used as a tincture, an extract and as a tea. Some women report feeling better after using it, but some say it had no effect on their hot flashes.

Pine Bark Extract

Also know as Pycnogenol. It can be purchased online or at health food stores. Pine Bark extract is made up of plant based hormones and organic flavonoids. It is also know to improve blood flow for Erectile Dysfunction, balance blood sugars, boost brain function, and reduce inflammation.

Ginseng

Ground ginseng can be taken as a tea or in a capsule. It is available almost anywhere. There is no evidence of it helping hot flashes, but it has been found to improve the quality and duration of sleep.

Black Cohash

This heart’s root are ground and is one of the most popular natural remedies for menopause symptoms. There is still conflicting evidence about it’s effects, but that seems to be the normal for all alternative medicine.

Wild Yam

Wild Yam is a botanical that has potential estrogen if activity. It may mimic the effects of estrogen on your body. It comes in a cream or a pill form.

Wild yam is also used for treating a disorder of the intestines called diverticulosis, gallbladder pain, rheumatoid arthritis, and for increasing energy.

Some women apply wild yam creams to the skin to reduce menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes.

Monat Sleep Drops

This is a soothing elixir of herbal extracts, amino acids and minerals that quiet the mind, relax the body and help with a more restful sleep. There no next day drowsiness. It supports the body’s natural stress response. It is sugar free and non habit forming. This product may not help hot flashes, but it can help with insomnia.

Risks and Complications

There are interactions of herbal supplements. Soy products can interact with antidepressants or synthetic estrogen. Ginseng can cause insomnia and headaches if you take too much of it.

Try one herb at a time to see what works and how it effects you.

Talk to a doctor or naturopath before trying any of these.

Some evidence shows natural remedies can help with perimenopause symptoms. More research is needed and these may not work for everyone. Talk to your healthcare provider about options for your symptoms.
